Pregnancy and Childbirth

An expectant mother can choose either a private obstetrician or go to the Gynae Department at Mater Dei Hospital. An expectant mother in the last trimester of her pregnancy is always referred to Mater Dei Hospital. Typically, a pregnant woman will have a medical check-up every four (4) weeks from the first referral until she reaches 32 weeks gestation. Then there are follow-up appointment at 34 and 36 weeks gestation. From 36 weeks onwards, the expectant mother is monitored weekly until birth.

A new mother who was working and intends to return to work is entitled to 14 weeks paid maternity leave and an optional extra 4 weeks maternity benefit.
