The European Union

The application for Malta's membership in the European Union (EU) was presented on the 16th July 1990. This became a divisive issue, with Malta's application being frozen in 1996 and subsequently being reactivated in 1998. Malta was formally accepted as a candidate country at the Helsinki summit of December 1999. After a long period of negotiations which were concluded late in 2002 a referendum on membership was held in 2003. Following the results of a Referendum, the mandate for Malta to join the European Union was confirmed in the National Elections of 2003. A local consensus on membership was subsequently achieved. The accession treaty was signed and ratified and Malta joined the EU on the 1st May 2004. Subsequently Malta joined the Eurozone on the 1st January 2008.
